Background
Like many children who had pencils put in their hands as toddlers, David loved to draw and paint from a very early age. Unlike other children, however, his first works on scraps of paper astonished family and friends. He has always had an extraordinary talent to portray realistic images with accuracy and technical precision but what also came across and still does, is a real love of the people, places and objects he draws and paints. His destiny was “drawn” as a small boy and he has had a passion for drawing and painting ever since.
Experience
Art was David's only real interest at school and he would go to great lengths to avoid academic subjects and sport so that he could escape to sketch and draw. After school, he went to Art College and was then “steered” into the advertising business by his father (who was concerned that drawing nudes didn't seem to offer him much of a future)! This experience provided him not only with a career to learn and develop his skills and experience in other areas (like film and television production) but also the opportunity to work in Australia, New Zealand, and Dubai on diverse advertising accounts including many multinational organisations. While creative advertising appealed to his versatility (in the pre–digital age) he always managed to “keep his hand in” — on the drawing board!
Decision
One day, ten years ago, after years of yearning and speculating he decided to give up the advertising world to become “The pure artist I should always have been”. It was a life–changing decision and this website shows the result of that decision in a diverse collection of works that intrigue and fascinate all that see them.
An outstanding portfolio of Reflected Dimensions, Portraiture, Landscapes/Cityscapes, Marine Subjects and Automotive Subjects is represented on this website. David's love for these areas continues to grow, however, now elements of his style and techniques have started to “morph” together to produce a new Surrealism and Combines Series that are uniquely David K. Rees.
